After hosting its first reggae music festival on August 12/2010, Newport Rhode Island can now be referred to as the island of festivals. It was a proud and memorable moment for the city, local reggae bands and performing artists.
Rebel Heat, Soulshot and The Ravers band opened the Newport Reggae festival from i:30pm until 06:00 with a variety of classical reggae covers songs and original music.
Rebel Heat is a local reggae band based in Smithfield, RI. The band is managed by Johnny (Pit bull) Provost a talented and versatile guitar player. He is also the owner of the Buddy Roach Jazz quartet.
Mykal Kumasi made a guest appearance and got the festival rolling a vintage MKJ performance of cover and original songs.
Mykal and Johnny have played together with different musicians and bands in Rhode Island on many occasions.
The main feature of the show was John Brown's Body and the new Wailers band with former Bob Marley band members, Al Anderson and Junior Marvin.
Also appearing at the reggae festival was a former member of the Satellite, Doreen Shaffer, who made a guest appearance with the Soul Shots band. Her performance was excellent and reflected her maturity and years of experience as a singer.
In keeping with its traditions and appreciation for the performing arts, the first reggae festival in Newport RI was a historical musical event that exceeded the expectations of many. Perhaps a change of venue or better utilization of the space will enhance the atmosphere
